Maestir Grange

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 08325g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Risca
Unitary authority : Caerphilly
NGR : ST23938994
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Grange

Summary :
A grange of Llantarnam, the modern Pont-y-mistir.

Description :
A grange of Llantarnam, the modern Pont-y-mistir. Williams (1976, vii plan 1) shows this at around ST2390; mentioned in general lists of granges (Williams 1976, 88-9; 2001, 304 no.76), but no further detail. Pierce (2000, 135-7) identifies Maistir/Mayster with Pontymister Farm at SS23938994, which he suggests was the location of an Early Medieval monastic site (PRN 08438g)
Evans 2003: GGAT 73 Early-Medieval Ecclesiastical Sites Project database.

A study of aerial photographs identified parchmarks at ST2379589970 which indicated the presence of a rectangular enclosure; three of the enclosure sides were visible. A subsequent field visit did not identify any definite features on-site (Roberts 2014).

Valley grange in Aber-carn manor at former site of Pontymister Farm, now an industrial and retail park. Probably part of the Bassaleg Priory land gifted to the abbey circa 1200 (Procter 2018).
