Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 08225w
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Landore
Unitary authority : Swansea
NGR : SS66079517
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL CANAL BRIDGE

Summary :
A bridge over the Swansea Canal to the west of the Morfa Copper Works, shown on the OS Ed. 1 and subsequent maps.

Description :
The Swansea Canal was opened in 1798, with various additions and alterations during the 19th century along its course. A bridge over the Swansea Canal to the west of the Morfa Copper Works is shown on the 1st edition and subsequent OS maps. The first edition OS map of 1879 and an historic photograph taken in 1939 show that each side of the bridge had substantial wing walls that projected c. 4.5m into the main canal to join close to the skewback and springing of the arch.

The bridge was associated with an entrance to the works, subsequently blocked up.

(Miller & Pamment 2016)

The bridge is mentioned in the report: The Yorkshire Imperial Metals Site: A Site Appraisal (N Ludlow, 2002). At that time the bridge was still detectable on the ground.
