Tintern Abbey Main Leat

Summary :
An earthwork leat bringing water to the abbey (and probably also the abbey mill) from a stream that runs into the Angidy River.

Description :
Water to flush the main abbey drain, and probabaly also to drive the abbey mill, was led from the lttle stream which still runs (except in dry weather) into the Angidy river, near the school. A part of the old watercourse can still be seen between these limited yards(?) up the footpath at the back of the school on the Raglan road.
The remains of the watercourse are in fairly good condition and form the boundary of a wood. Its gradient, along a small re-entrant, is not constatnt but averages 1 in 10. There are no traces of paving along the conduit (OS card 59 NW 66)
