Tintern Abbey Main Drain

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00719g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Tintern
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : SO5331200067
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Aqueduct

Summary :
The main abbey drain enters the claustral buildings near the porch. One section can be seen between monks' refectory and the novices' lodging and then into the monks' latine. A secondary branch at a higher level ran towards the abbot's lodging.

Description :
The main abbey drain enters the claustral buildings near the porch through which visitors now [1956] go into the abbey, to flush the drains (OS card ST 59 NW 66).

Towards the northern end of the novices' lodging, it is possible to observe certain details of the main abbey drain. At this point, within the now open drain, grooved stones at each side marke the position of sluice gates. The water level would have been raised before it was released through to the monks' latrine. Riasing the water level also released water through a higher, secondary channel running north-east towards the abbot's lodging (Robinson 1986, 42)

The water is brought to the site by the leat 03271.0g.
