Neath Abbey Woollen Mill

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 01869w
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Blaenhonddan
Unitary authority : Neath Port Talbot
NGR : SS73769808
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL WOOLLEN MILL / Medieval Mill

Summary :
Woollen mill at Neath Abbey, occupying buildings previously used as the rolling mill of Neath Abbey Ironworks.

Description :
The woollen mills of Neath Abbey are visible on both the 1st edition OS map from 1877 and the 1940's 4th edition. They do, however, appear more extensive on the 1940's edition, having been extended both ways (Bowden and Roberts 2012).

Neath Abbey Mill was constructed in 1825 as the rolling mill and forge for the Neath Abbey Ironworks (PRN 01555w), but in 1870 was sold off and converted into a woolen mill. It continued in production until 1974, when the machinery was given, as working concern, to Swansea Museum. The machinery was later taken to the National Woolen Museum at Drefach Felindre, Newcatle Emlyn, before being installed at the Gower Heritage Centre, Parkmill.
