Trust : Clwyd Powys
Community : Denbigh
Unitary authority : Denbighshire
NGR : SJ05266595
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL CHURCH
Status : state care , scheduled monument

Description :
Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester began the building of a church to serve the growing town and, it is reputed, with the intention that the see of the diocese be transferred from St Asaph. A foundation stone of 1578 and dedication inscription of 1579 are recorded. Work was abandoned in 1584, and the structure has since been eroded. Nevertheless, it is of remarkable interest as a unique Elizabethan instance of major church-building. Leicester was the leading supporter at court of the extreme protestants, who were already being referred to as Puritans, and his ideals are reflected in the architecture (Hubbard, 1986).
