Stonework in stream, Mathern Mill, Chepstow

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 11459g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Mathern
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : ST5179091232
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL BRIDGE

Summary :
Stonework in stream at Mathern Mill Chepstow;
Probable foundations for a bridge.

Description :
Probable foundations for a bridge: stonework in the stream bed and walling on the east bank, and traces of walling on the west bank.
The ground level of the eastern bank is in the region of 1.60m above the stream with at least a metre of stone work above the water line; stone work at least 2.40m in length.
Limestone blocks and large pebbles are visible as a layer at about 0.50m below the ground level of the field on the western bank. On the eastern side, pitched stonework has survived in the stream bed and loose stone, some large, elsewhere. Large blocks of limestone on the southern end of the flooring appear to provide an edge on the this downstream side. No edging visible on the northern side.
No definite dating for the stonework however diameter of tree growing within the wall on the eastern bank is 0.25m. A fragment of brick in the western stonework indicates a possible post medieval date.
The position of the stonework, north of the present footbridge, links with a footpath from the village which coincides with another footpath from the east marked on early OS maps but which has been lost or rerouted (Bray & Clarke 2006).
