Leat, east of Mathern Mill Farm, Chepstow

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 11449g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Mathern
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : ST5178191392
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL LEAT SYSTEM

Summary :
Leat, Mathern Mill Farm, Chepstow
Leat observed following eastern hedgerow boundary at Mathern Mill Farm

Description :
The leat runs beside hedge remains below the rising ground of the adjoining field. The bank has the appearance of a leat which now ends abruptly before the motorway. The curved alignment continues on the other side of the motorway and ends in the garden, and close to the moat, of Moyes Court.
Earlier maps show the feature almost complete and suggest that it may have been a water course supplying the Court gardens from a brook along a level around the valley side. Later works have confused the start of the alignment from the brook and there has been 20th century dumping of spoil along its length (Bray & Clarke 2006).
