NGR : ST16688680
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL Farm

Summary :
A post medieval 2-storey building sharing the site of the former Castell y Van country house (PRN00694) built by the Lewis family. Though it cannot be identified as part of the main house it seems to occupy an ancillary building.

Description :
Sharing the site of the former Castell y Van, built by the Lewis family in the 16th century. The farmhouse is of two storeys, the walls built of stuccoed stone rubble. The roof is partly of stone slates and partly of galverised iron. It has modern windows of Tudor style and a modern doorway. It cannot be identified as part of the main house and seems to be an ancillary building incorporated with a barn on its east side. Almost all the minor buildings in the vicinity are of the 17th century type with stone mullioned windows, plain chamfered doorways etc. Some were in complete ruin by 1956, while others were being used as barns. Both the farm and the remains of the old house were the property of the Earl of Plymouth at this date.
