Description :
A large oblong hill fort situated on the top of a narrow ridge running WSW/ENE on the NW edge of Caerleon. It occupies a commanding position with extensive views all round. It is defended by a series of banks and ditches, with a narrow entrance and inner enclosure at the West end.
This multivallate hillfort is situated on the top of a narrow ridge that runs west southwest - east northeast on the northeast edge of Caerleon. Occupying a commanding position, its defences consist a series of banks and ditches, with a narrow entrance and an inner enclosure both at the west end. The entrance is simple, but with heightened banks.
The east ends defences consist a single massive, steep sided bank between 4-5m in height, with trees growing out of the top of this. Just outside the defences to the east are the gardens of lodge which have, over time, crept within the defences and now sit outside the scheduled area but within the main internal area of the hillfort.
This fort has had limited excavation undertaken, with SMC consent, focusing on the western part of the interior and defences. Part of the work evaluated the extent of damage currently being caused by mountain bike trails over the monument.
An archaeological survey report was produced afterwards document a topographic survey done over the same western area. (Wiggins 2006)
Triple banked enclosure with outworks to the on south, west and north, enclosing an area of c2.2ha. Small oval enclosure (100 x 50m) lies within the western third of the interior. Three areas excavated - 106 sq ft within western part of the interior of the hill fort close to the southern rampart, trench through the first sequence of bank and ditch, third trench sited over the innermost section of the western entrance. Excavations provided evidence of an early to middle iron-age construction of the hill fort, and for contemporary activity, both occupation and metal-working on some scale, within the interior. (Howell and Pollard 2000)
