Description :
A standing stone located in the middle of an arable field. "The long stone gives its name to the parish.the lang stone is mentioned in the 10th century in connection with a gift by a certain Asser, son of Marchiad to the see of Llandaff the village of Segan (Langstone) with nine modii of land"(Rees 1932; Bradney 1932). It is sub-rectangular in form and lying on its largest flat side, it most probably stood upright as a menhir, the stone has a soil build up on its NW side due to modern colluviual movements. It is a sedimentary rock with two large fracture lines running vertically against the sedimentation lines, NE side, perhaps indicating stresses caused by the suggested 'breaking' of the menhir (Rees 1932; Bradney 1932).
Dimensions: dia 1.6m x 1.4m; hght 0.4m x 0.5m
(1932) "The long stone which gives its name to the parish is to be seen in a field about half a mile eastward from the court, and is a square block of conglomerate. It measures 4ft6" by 4ft6" and is 2ft high. It has the appearance of having been broken through, and before a portion was detached may have been a standing stone, maenhir. The lang stone is mentioned in the C10th in connection with a gift by a certain Asser, son of Marchiad to the see of Llandaff the village of Segan (Langstone) with nine modii of land". (Source 01/02/03)
(1957) The stone is described above. It is situated on a hilltop in an ideal site for a barrow. A part of the stone has been broken off as judged by its jagged SE face, if the present upper face was an embedded base then a portion must have been removed as it would never have been a landmark. If such a portion were removed it must have been monstrous in weight and the stone is therefore almost certainly prostrate. Its present appearance is too insignificant to give its name to a parish. There is no trace of an associated mound or of other similar stones in the vicinity. (Source 01)
