Merlin's Stone;parc Y Maen Llwyd;carreg Furddin

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 5382
Trust : Dyfed
Community : Abergwili
Unitary authority : Carmarthenshire
NGR : SN45982112
Site Type (preferred type first) : Bronze Age Standing Stone

Summary :
Probable bronze age standing stone. No current evidence for early medieval date. NDL 2003

Description :
This stone was also listed in the SMR as an inscribed stone. This is a substantial monolith of Millstone Grit with bedding planes clearly visible and containing a large number of quartz fragments. On the W side if the stone there are two deep hollows, one of which may have been culturally embellished. On the S face the stone is weathered and bears a large depression on the right hand side. The N face is extremely flat and covered with lichen. The E side is also flat and demonstrates the tapered nature of the stone. This monolith rises in height from W-E, from 1.45m to 1.7m, i.e towards the prominent hill in Nantgaredig, and also towards round barrow 9827 c. 150m to the ENE, with which this stone was intervisible. The stone is set in a hollow and remains in a stable condition although some animal erosion was noted around its base. No ogham inscriptions previously recorded on the stone were detected. At the base of the stone on its S side there is a 'step' which suggests that part of the stone has broken off at some point, possibly an antiquity. N Bestley PFRS 2001
