Description :
The workshop was built between 1801 and 1843 and was attached to an earlier building thought to have originally been a service range for Castle House (02022g) prior to the 19th century, after which it was converted into stables. The North Upper Room of the workshop was built in the 1970s.

Prior to the works in 2019 (see E008622), the exterior of the workshop consisted of a gabled-ended stone building with a slate roof and an attached shed made of corrugated iron, breeze blocks and timber. There were two wooden doors entering the property on the south elevation and another one in the north-east and the north-west corners. On the south elevation there was a small window, monastic in character, that appeared to be a recent addition within a rebuilt wall. There were two mullion windows, each with nine glass units and wooden frames, on the south elevation.

By the time of the 1846 Gwehelog Tithe Map, the full length of the stables, including the current workshop, had been constructed. The 1886 Ordnance Survey (OS) Map shows the stable block with an extension in the north-west corner, on the site of the current Steel Shed. This had been removed by the 1902 OS map, when a small square structure had been built on the site of the current garages. According to the 1922 and 1954 OS maps there were no significant changes to the stable block until its conversion into a workshop in the 1970s, at which point the shed to the rear was constructed.

When subjected to an interior watching brief in 2019, the stable/workshop's original cobbled floor was found beneath modern floorboards, in a well preserved condition (Churchill 2020).

Whilst the workshop is located within the outer bailey of Usk Castle, it is not part of the Scheduled Monument. It is, however, part of the Listed Building curtilage.
