Description :
An historic landscape area characterised by a small village dominated by a church and a ruined castle, a former enclosure pattern reflected in the street pattern of the modern suburbs, and an expansion following the arrival of the Great Western Railway in the mid-19th century.

Caldicot was a small village dominated by a church (00509g) and ruined castle (00513g) until 1850. The population of the town doubled in the mid-19th century due to the coming of the Great Western Railway and also some small-scale industry. Further expansion was also seen in the 1960s with the opening of the Llanwern Steelworks to the west (16458g). The town has continued to expand due to its position within the existing M4 corridor. Roman pottery kilns were found during the construction of the south-west suburbs.
