Description :
Blackwall Reen, Magor Marsh Reserve Gwent Wildlife Trust

Magor Marsh reserve lies inside the northern edge of the Caldicot Level, part of the Gwent Levels , a flat low-lying area formed mainly of peat, clay and silt. The Gwent Levels consists of a coastal strip from Chepstow to close to Cardiff. The Levels are made up of the Wentlooge Levels to the west of the River Usk and the Caldicot Levels to the east. There is significant evidence of prehistoric occupation of the Levels. Deliberate drainage using a system of drains or reens was begun by the Romans and continued through the Middle Ages.
To the west of the reserve is a track called Black Wall with Blackwall Reen east and Blackwall Reen West on either side.
Reen is a corruption of 'rhine 'or rheen ' used as a term for a ditch. Often reens on the Gwent Levels have no raised bank or revetment walls. Unusually Blackwall Reen East has a stone revetment wall visible in the side of the ditch, date unknown (Trett 2005)
