19th Century Stable, Morfa Copperworks, Swansea

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 10367w
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Landore
Unitary authority : Swansea
NGR : SS6606095135
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL STABLE

Summary :
The site of a 19th century stable building in close proximity to one of the bridges crossing the canal. Part of the Morfa Copperworks complex.

Description :
The site of a 19th century stable building, constructed of stone with lime mortar outer walls, and dressed stone foundations - apart from those on the northern side, which were constructed of red brick. The whole structure measured c. 6m by 7.5m externally, with an internal space c.5.2m by 6.7m. Its entrance was on the southern side. The floor consisted of several patches of brick and tile paving and there were two distinct worn oval/sub-circular patches in the floor tiles that appeared to correspond with the position of the front and back hooves of a tethered horse.

The stable was located in close proximity to one of the bridges crossing the canal and it appears that this point in the canal was chosen as a convenient place to change horses and rest them.

It is part of the Morfa Copperworks complex (00842w).
