Description :
A row of 9 cottages built probably built between 1813 and 1818 to the north of the Neath Abbey Ironworks. They were originally simple one-up, one-down stone cottages under slate roofs. An additional rear room under a catslide roof was added to each cottage in the late 19th century.

The dating of the terraced row of cottages has been uncertain, but map and documentary evidence indicates that they appeared between 1813 and 1818. Mortar evidence from the excavations shows that 19th century type mortar was used in the construction of the cottage walls. The cottages were last used during the first half of the 20th century. They were abandoned c.1949 and shortly afterwards had their roofs removed and the walls reduced, with rubble mostly pushed into the cottages, infilling their interiors.

The excavation of the sixth in the row from the south end in 2023 (E007520) showed that the demolition rubble had protected the floors and lower walls. The front room had a brick floor, with a brick hearth and chimney also surviving. The rear room had a flagstone floor (Hall & Sambrook, 2025).
