The original abbey church was constructed in 11th century, but it was rebuilt on a larger scale at the end of 13th century, in the Decorated style. Much of this later building still survives to eaves level.

Description :
The abbey church at Tintern, originally constructed in 12th century, was rebuilt in stages to allow services to continue uninterrupted, and is reported by a lost chronicle to have taken 32 years and to have been completed in 1301; the various stages can also be detected in changing architectural detail. A pulpitum screen and a west porch were added in the third decade of the 14th century, both of which are now represented largely by fragments that are no longer in situ. Much of the rest of the church survives to eaves level, including the impressive west front with its great seven-light traceried window over the west door. Most of the other windows also preserve Decorated tracery. The church is of the usual cruciform plan, with aisles to the nave and chancel; the transepts each had two chapels.
