Conventual Buildings, Llanthony Priory

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 09576g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Crucorney
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : SO28852786
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval priory
Status : Site Cared for by the State

Summary :
The only part of the cloister to survive is a small fragment of the southeast end of its outer wall. The surviving sections of the west range are late 12th century with later modifications, and are probably to be identified as the parlour and the under croft to the canons dormitory; remains of the priory's lodging may be incorporated into Court Farm immediately to the south. The south range is represented only by traces of another building, probably the refectory, at the surviving corner of the cloister. The slype and chapter house survive in the east range, both of the mid 13th century. The infirmary is believed to have been transformed into the parish church (PRN 01737g).

Description :
Although the only part of the cloister to survive is a small fragment of the southeast end of its outer wall, some of the buildings that would have formed its east and west ranges are still extant, those of the west range now partly incorporated into the Abbey Hotel. The west range was constructed at the same time as the priory church (1180-1200), with some later modifications. A narrow three-bay vaulted ground-floor room adjoining the southwest tower may have been the outer parlour. This had a west door in Decorated style. To its south is a groin-vaulted under croft, presumably to the canons dormitory. Slight traces survive of the east end of the refectory that occupied the south range. The surviving buildings of the east range are in the developed Early English style of the mid 13th century with stiff-leaved capitals to the shafts. The slype, a two-bay vaulted passage to the south of the south transept, connected the cloister to the area east of the church. To its south are the remains of the chapter house, a large rectangular building in four bays articulated by triple shafts, the western three bays being of the usual rectangular form whilst the east bay has a half-hexagonal plan. It would have been lighted by single lancets to each bay above a high dado. Part of another doorway survives to the south of the chapter house, but it is not clear what building it provided access to. To the east of the cloister complex, the building that is now the parish church (St Davids PRN01737g) is thought to have originated as the infirmary with its chapel, and to the south of the canons dormitory, the post-medieval dwelling of Court Farm is believed to have incorporated parts of the priory's lodging.
