NGR : SO28852788
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval church

Summary :
The priory church was constructed 1180-1200 in Transitional style. It has the usual cruciform plan with crossing tower and two smaller towers in its western front. The outer walls of the aisles have disappeared, but enough survives of the rest to give a good idea of its original appearance.

Description :
Enough remains of the Transitional style priory church (built in 1180-1200) to provide the full plan and a significant amount of the elevation, the only section completely lost being the outer walls of the aisles. Most of the openings are pointed, but they are varied in places with round-headed openings; continuous roll-mouldings outlining arches and trumpet-scallop capitals to the shafts are typical features of the design. The church was constructed mainly in Old Red Sandstone with a small amount of tufa; the plan is cruciform, and the length internally is 64m. The west front was faced in ashlar and embellished with blind arcading, with two towers projecting very slightly. Internally, these towers adjoin the westernmost bay of the nave; the next six bays open to the north and south aisles through an arcade with pointed arches carried on square piers, all faced in ashlar, but the walls above the tops of the arches are faced in roughly coursed rubble. The triforium has round-headed openings, and there are traces of the clerestory above. Part of a ribbed vault survives at the west end of the north aisle. The easternmost bay of the nave is more elaborately treated, suggesting that the canons’ stalls extended into here from the crossing. The crossing itself has pointed arches to support the tower, which originally rose three storeys above with the openings on each level grouped in threes. The south transept survives nearly to its full height, faced in rubble and with a pair of very large round-headed lancets surmounted by a circular oculus in its south wall, and traces of vaulting. It seems originally to have been planned as two chapels, but was later modified to form a single, three-bay chapel. Much less survives of the north transept, but in the 14th century this transept was adapted for domestic use. The east window of the presbytery was originally a group of lancets, replaced in the early 14th century by a single traceried window of which little now survives. The east façade was faced with ashlar, whilst the side walls were rubble. Only one of the windows of the long walls survives, at the east end of the north wall. Some of the groups of shafts that supported the vault remain. An extension was added in the corner between the presbertery and south transept in the later Middle Ages.
