Firebrick Furnaces, Hafod Copper Works,

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 08422w
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Landore
Unitary authority : Swansea
NGR : SS6623395098
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL METAL PRODUCTION FURNACE / POST MEDIEVAL REVERBERATORY FURNACE

Summary :
Two post medieval firebrick furnaces belonging to Hafod Copper Works.

Description :
An excavation at Hafod Copper Works found two post medieval firebrick furnaces under a deep layer of overburden. One furnace had slag and copper residue fused to some of its bricks and survived only as a pad of firebrick aligned north-east/south-west. The other probable reverberatory furnace was more complete with a possible rake out pit to the north-west (Harrison 2016).

In 2021 a wall was unearthed directly over the location of a petrol store and partially overlapping with the Chili House furnaces. Floor surfaces was also uncovered whcih were thought to relate to the furnace house; if so, then these floors are potentially of high significance, as they may relate to some of the earliest smelting activity being conducted within the Hafod works (Eyre-Morgan & Morgan 2021).
