Summary :
Part of the former Clydach Rail Road at Cheltenham.

Description :
The Clydach Railroad was built by the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal Company after its incorporation in 1793. Construction of the Rail Road was started before the canal was built. The mainline and all branches of the Clydach Railroad were built as an edge trailway for vehicles with flanged wheels. The rail road ran for seven miles and two furlongs. The railway had two bridges and was opened in stages probably in 1794.

The course of the Rail Road survived only in fragments . For archaeological assessment the route was divided into seven separate sections, of these four were evaluated.

Evaluation information suggested that the trackbed formation was consistent throughout the length of the route with layers of clay forming a levelling layer of varying depth dependent on the terrain and topography. overlain by a layer of angular stone hogging (c0.10 depth) forming the track bed. A branch line was revealed from the Gelli Felen colleries to the Rail Road.

Almost all part of the Clydach Railroad had become public footpaths.
