Five Lanes Villa 2, Caerwent

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 07052g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Caerwent
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : ST4460091000
Site Type (preferred type first) : UNKNOWN CROPMARK / Unknown Field system

Summary :
System of fields and enclosures identified on aerial photos.
The site was recommended for scheduling by Evans in 2001 as the site is an Iron Age enclosed farmstead with associated field system, apparently replaced by two successive villa buildings, one on the same site and one with a change of site but embellished with tessellated pavements. Neither type is common in South East Wales, and the site gains further importance from its association with the Roman town at Caerwent.

Description :
System of fields and enclosures showing as cropmarks, ranging from square to long and narrow rectangular; possibly also a roundhouse. Closely adjacent to winged corridor villa building (PRN983g) and the small subsidiary building; one long narrow (cursus-like) enclosure is definitely not contemporary with winged corridor building, but other enclosures may be. On an air photograph of 1996 taken by John Sorrell. (Evans 2001)
