Neath Abbey Ironworks Charging Ramp

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 06622w
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Dyffryn Clydach
Unitary authority : Neath Port Talbot
NGR : SS7374797743
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL tramway embankment
Status : Scheduled Monument

Summary :
The charging ramp of the southern blast furnace at Neath Abbey Ironworks consists of a stone-revetted causeway, of which a section 35m long and c5m high survives on Longford Road.

Description :
The charging ramp of the southern blast furnace at Neath Abbey Ironworks consists of a causeway for a tramway, revetted in coursed sandstone rubble and pierced by two arches, one 3m high and the other 1,7m high. A 35m length survives, rising to a height of c5m before being broken by the modern Longford Road, which has removed approximately 12m of the length. It does not appear on the 1st edn OS 25" map (although the blast furnaces appear otherwise functional), so charging arrangements may have changed by that date.
