Llantarnam Settlement / Parish, Llanfihangel

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 03640g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Llantarnam
Unitary authority : Torfaen
NGR : ST30999301
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Deserted rural settlement

Summary :
Site of Llantarnum deserted medieval settlement. Three buildings were identified in trial excavations and two roads of tracks were also located, along with four pits. Excavations revealed that it is likely that a major medieval settlement was located in the vicinity due to the medieval pottery finds in building one. Building two is also thought to be of medieval date due to the clay and glazed ridge roof tiles from this period but building three is thought to be 18th century in date due to finds associated with this era.
One of the trackways is thought to lead from Abbey Lane to Llantarnam Abbey and the other towards building one and two. A possible drainage ditch was also found to the west of the second track.
There were also four pits found. Two were not excavated, one was underlying the road and was stone-lined and the last is of modern date.

Description :
Site of Llantarnum deserted medieval settlement.
Trial excavations at the site revealed parts of three buildings were identified (see 07574g, 07575g, 07576g and 07577g for more detail). Trackways and pits were also revealed (see 07581g and 07582g).

Two roads or tracks were revealed during the excavation. One of these roads was more substantial and was visible as a linear earthwork or agger which lead eastwards from the end of Abbey Lane towards Llantarnam Abbey. For further information see, Page, N.A. (1993) Excavations at Llantarnam Village, Gwent.

Medieval and early post-medieval settlement site between modern village of Llantarnam and the Abbey, probably deserted in phases up to the late eighteenth century (Procter 2018).
