Description :
Mid C19th incline viaduct built on piers faced with copper-slag blocks.

The extant features, which comprise a pier and associated wall, are listed for their group value with the other listed buildings on the Hafod Copper Works/ Yorkshire Imperial Metals site.

The canal side boundary wall was built in 1809 at the commencement of the development of the Hafod works. It is constructed in Pennant sandstone and copper slag blocks, with moulded copper slag copings. It has been much altered during its life and includes a bricked up arch formally leading to a canal basin supplying the works.

The pier was inserted in the wall c. 1850 to support an inclined tramway to carry spoil over the Swansea Canal to a tip to the west of the site. It too is constructed of Pennant freestone with square copper block quoins. The top is missing.

A full description and development and historical timelines may be found in the report: The Yorkshire Imperial Metals Site: A Site Appraisal (N Ludlow, 2002).
