Siarpal Farmstead/Mansion House

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 02233g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Crucorney
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : SO2902528550
Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL FARMSTEAD / POST MEDIEVAL House

Summary :
Un-finished, Post-medieval house.

Description :
Un-finished, Post-medieval house called Siarpal belonging to Walter Savage Landor. See County Treasures. Walter Savage Landor constructed his unfinished house, The Grove at Siarpal, probably built on the site of an existing upland small-holding: Siarpal, recorded as a farm of 2 acres in 1799.

Siarpal was occupied by the Williams family prior to Landor and the farmstead may have previously had a higher status: a late eighteenth century family tablet in Cwmyoy church referring to it as Sharp Hall (Procter 2018). Landor described The Grove (or plans) as comprising a large dining room, drawing-room, library, six family bedrooms and six servants, with additional quarters and his offices at the priory (Procter 2018). Part of Cwmyoy Manor and associated with Llanthony Priory.
