Description : Complex of C2nd/3rd buildings. Slag and bloom scatter and pottery over an area of several hundred sq m. Evidence for metal working.
Ploughed annually for many years. Plough damage recorded from discovery onwards. Considerable erosion and storm 'outwash' - ie more than a foot of soil etc washed to bottom of field last season. (OS Record card)
Excavation by Monmouth Archaeological Society followed the ploughing up of a massive Roman sill stone. Test holes at several points in the field revealed foundations accompanied by Roman pottery and investigation of the find spot of the sill stone revealed a doorway flanked by a wall carrying bases for a colonade. The site of the Roman villa is a field sloping towards the NW on the S side of the river Wye. At present the field is planted with barley. There are no visible remains. The sill stone is in the field to the N, against the E side of the barn. (Whittle, 1987)
