Corn Mill, Llanthony Priory

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 01735g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Crucorney
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : SO2873727643
Site Type (preferred type first) : Unknown Mill
Status : Site Cared for by the State

Summary :
A mill within the area covered by the outer precinct of Llanthony Priory. There is no certain evidence that it was one of the mills known to have been owned by the priory in the Middle Ages.

Description :
Across the main road, nearly opposite the present main entrance to the priory is a mill driven by the Honddi. The mill ceased working in 1919. This mill has been linked with medieval documentary evidence of mills belonging to the priory. There is no certain evidence in the visible remains to support this identification, but the necessity to have access to water management features as their infrastructure means that mill sites tend to be long-lived.

The mill has been largely demolished and a stone rubble building on the west side of the mill trace appears to be comparatively modern. The mill race has been partly infilled and shows no evidence of antiquity. The pond banks are of stone and earth construction and they average 1.5m high. The area enclosed is reed-covered. The size of the ponds and the retaining banks are completely out of character with medieval fish ponds and appear more likely to belong to some past mill activity. (OS card SO 22 NE/Monm 1 SE 1.12). Mill Field (SO287277) holds a mill pond and leat running from tributaries of the Honddu (Procter 2018). Part of Cwmyoy Manor.
