Summary :
Monmouth former town defences, formerly an earthwork and palisade, updated to stone in the 13th century.

Description :
The initial town defences at Monmouth comprised earthworks and timber palisades, following the line of St John's Street, Glendower Street, Priory Street and Granville Street. It is thought that the River Wye may have provided sufficient defence to the south east. The defences were replaced by walls and gates in the 13th century, with four gates being built (Taylor 1951). However, by c.1538, only the gates, fragments of the wall and the ditch remained (Leland 1538), and it is not known if the wall was completed to the south and east of the town. Speed's map of c.1610 depicts only two stretches of wall, located between the West Gate and the castle, and the castle and Dixton Gate (Burton 1954).
