MOYNES COURT MOAT
Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 01215g Trust : Glamorgan Gwent Community : Mathern Unitary authority : Monmouthshire NGR : ST51999085 Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Moat Status : Scheduled Monument
Summary : Rectangular moated site, possibly medieval, adjacent to Moyne's Court (1214g). The ditches are approx: 3m across, by 1.2m deep, with the soil thrown up on the exterior to form a broad low counterscarp bank.
Description : Please note that some of the sources contain information that, as yet, has not been included in this description field. This will be updated in due course. Probably built C1609 by Bishop Godwin of Llandaff when he moved to Moynes Court from his nearby residence of Mathern Palace. The heraldic plague over the main entrance to the house has his coat of arms and is dated 1609 to record his rebuilding of the pre-existing, probably C16th, country house. However the site's origins are medieval with motte to S (1215G) and gatehouse to N (1216G).
