Tintern Abbey Outer Gatehouse, St Anne's House

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00716g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Tintern
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : ST53189995
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Gatehouse

Summary :
The gatehouse between the highway and the outer precinct of Tintern Abbey, of which sections survive, incorporated into the fabric of the post-medieval St Anne's House.

Description :
Part of the fabric of the outer gatehouse of Tintern Abbey is preserved in the post-medieval St Anne's House. The surviving parts that have been recognised are part of the vault to the entranceway, the gatehouse chapel (PRN 00715g), and the undercroft below the east end of the chapel which seems to have been occupied by the porter.

In the north wall of the house are two springers of the two-bay vault of the entrance gateway. It had circular moulded capitals and chamfered ribs. The chapel undercroft has a 13th century chamfered doorway and a two light window with a trefoiled head, and another lancet (?to the chapel). The east wall retains the chapel's east window.

Part of the Abbey Gatehouse is incorporated within the listed St Anne's House (PRN 00715g; LB 2051 Grade II*), apparently of thirteenth/fourteenth century date and contemporary with much of the fabric of the Abbey. Remains include elaborate windows supposedly from the chapel at the gate. Though the majority of the existing St Anne's House appears to be mid-nineteenth century in date, including the former associated dairy (LB 24050 Grade II), the good survival of the medieval features in the original the part of the building indicates that it remained in use after the Dissolution (Roberts, Gerrard and Graham 2009: Robinson 1995; Russell et al 1990; and Newman 2000)
