Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00650w
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Briton Ferry
Unitary authority : Neath Port Talbot
NGR : SS76579425
Site Type (preferred type first) : Bronze Age Cairnfield

Summary :
It is a group of 5 small cairns located in Gaer Fawr (4km S. of Neath), at 250-260m above O.D., in the southern part of the enclosures, size varying between 2-4m in diameter and 0.2/0.6 m. high. Originally 19 were detected but only five remain.

Description :
It is a group of small cairns located in Gaer Fawr (4km S. of Neath), at 250-260m above O.D., in the southern part of the enclosures. One is oval, about 4 by 3m and 0.2m high, situated between the main and the intermediate ramparts. The most easterly mound is about 4m in diameter and 0.6m high. The last three are smaller, about 2.5m in diameter and 0.2/0.3m high. All have a good definition and seem to be undisturbed. The group may originally have numbered as many as nineteen cairns (by O.S investigators in 1956 and 1958). But by 1976, no trace of fourteen of the nineteen cairns have been found, they have presumably been ploughed away (RCAHM 1976).
The site was visited on 05/06/08 and the area is very overgrown with vegetation, making it hard to discern the features. Some damage has been caused by mountain biking.
