Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00432w

Community : Bonymaen
Unitary authority : Swansea
NGR : SS663949

Hoard of about 500 coins of 3rd century date found in 1836 in a pot 'very like a modern oval tureen 8 inches by 5, and about 4 inches high with a large mouth and no cover.

Description :
Hoard of about 500 coins of 3rd century date found in 1836 in a pot 'very like a modern oval tureen 8 inches by 5, and about 4 inches high with a large mouth and no cover, but there was a groove for one. The colour was a dirt brown, in composition and fabric extremely coarse and rude, very like a common crucible.' Grant Francis examined 260 coins, of Gallienus, Salonina, Victorinus, Marius, Tetricus I and II, Claudius Gothicus, Aurelian and Quintillus. Said to be associated with bones.

Findspot described by Llywelyn Morgan (1899, 68) under his description of the parish of Llansamlet as probably being 'on the southern side of the road to Swansea, about 150 yards of the cross road [Sarnau]'. He quotes the description by Grant Francis given above, which also notes that, when found, the bones 'were flung into the stream'. The stream rises more than 150 yards west of the crossroads, and has been used to provide the NGR given here; a literal raiding of 150 yards would give about SS67679509.

A short note on the discovery of the Gwindy coin hoard appears in the Miscellanies section of volume 1 of the Numismatic Journal 1836-1837. This notes the hoard was found at “The Gwindy” in the Llansamlet parish two miles from Swansea near to the Via Julia Roman road and is confirmed by later studies (Calis & Gilbert 2021).
