Summary : A group of 6 pillow mounds on the crest of Cefn Hirgoed. All the mounds are surrounded by weak ditches and all are grass covered. Originally a group of 11+ associated with rabbit farming at the medieval moated site to the south and/or Coity Castle.
Description : There is a group of 6 Pillow mounds on the crest of Cefn Hirgoed. All the mounds are surrounded by weak ditches and all are grass covered. Three mounds scheduled as medieval or post-medieval rabbit farming associated with the medieval moated site to the south (PRN 363m) and/or Coity Castle (PRN 370m). A group of 11 or more such pillow mounds lay on the common at Cefn Hirgoed before construction of the adjacent M4 motorway cutting, recorded by RCAHMW, with 4 excavated by GGAT. The scheduled area comprises 3 oval areas surrounded 2 mounds which are unexcavated, and a mound consisting of 2 warrens on the motorway cutting which were partially excavated.
