Description : Newport Castle consists of what was once the E.front of a rectangular bailey, except for foundations all other parts of the fortress have been destroyed. The scheduled area has been revised to exclude the N curtain and adjacent areas, which were demolished during the construction of a main road. The castle was constructed on its present site between 1327 and 1386. A recent summary of history of castle undertaken by Knight 1991.
Phillips describes the castle as a masonry structure with no evidence suggesting an earlier earthwork or motte on site (Phillips 2004).
