Description :

OS card ST 29 NW 8 summarises evidence for a chapel here as follows: Abercarn was a chapelry of Mynyddislwyn before it became a separate parish (oral, Canon E T Davies) Field name Cae Eglwys/Cae Capel. During ploughing [to a depth of about 8in] fragments of lime-mortared masonry were found in an area about 20 yds square.no actual walling or foundations were visible. NGR ST22949734 (Oral, local); this site has been given the PRN 95g. Williams (1976, 81) notes the name as possibly indicating a pre-Norman ecclesiastical site.
On the NW corner of the field to the N of the supposed site of the church are the remains of a small ancient rectangular enclosure which is locally pointed out as the site of the `old church (sited at ST22869754), and its surrounding graveyard (PRN 03289g) On the gently sloping ground are faint traces of a mound which may cover the vestiges of a small building. Close to the western boundary of the field, near where the stones were ploughed up, there is a further pile of stones in which a fragment of moulded stone window or door jamb, possibly of early date was found (ST22819734). (RCAHM MS, ud)
ST228975 Cropmarks of the enclosure boundary visible; also two adjoining square features near the centre of the enclosure (APs RAF 58/676/4248-9; F22/58/5154/0230-1) (Source 01)
Not in Brook 1988 (Chapel Farm Abercan on p 79 is a different site).
