Summary :
Marked by Rees as the site of St Istan's Chapel, extant in 14th century.
Coxe (1801, 58-9) identifies a ruined building in a wood at this location as a the Bendictine priory of Basseleg (PRN 46g), a cell of Glastonbury.

Marked by Rees as the site of St Istan's Chapel, extant in 14th century.
Coxe (1801, 58-9) identifies a ruined building in a wood at this location as a the Bendictine priory of Basseleg (PRN 46g), a cell of Glastonbury; the wood in his time was called Coed y Monachty. No visible remains of a building in 1957 (OS card ST 28 NW 4). Williams (2001, 304 no.76a) lists Mynachty under the granges of Llantarnam Abbey, and notes this location as 'poss site of Basseleg Priory, subsumed into lands of Llantarnam; Mynachty Wood adjoins (eastern portion of present Park Wood)'
Brook (1988, 77) gives the first recorded date of St Istan's as 1314-5 and lists the site as unknown.
