Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 4671
Trust : Gwynedd
Community : Bro Garmon
Unitary authority : Conwy
NGR : SH84385665
Site Type (preferred type first) : Prehistoric BARROW
Status : Scheduled Monument

Description :
Maen Pebyll is an unchambered long barrow which formerly had a standing stone surrounded by small stones at the E end. All that now remains is the outer fringe of the mound 1-2ft high and the broken fragments of the large stone. Scheduled. <1>

Fully described and illustrated in <2> <3>

The turf-covered remains of a long barrow, as described. It is composed of soil and stones. The perimeter scarp is 0.6m high and the stone fragments stand 1.4m high. <4>

Maen Pebyll is considered a doubtful site and classified under 'structures which are probably cists, or are otherwise wrongly classified as chambered tombs.'. <5>

3 large stones in a heap. Mound indistinct. Erosion caused by cattle around stones, especially on E side. Tyre tracks (apparently now an established track) running round site from SW to N. <7>

Rectangular mound with 4 large stones (up to 2m in length) at north-east end. Boulders are said to be either remains of a broken standing stone (a very large one) or a cist. If they are either a cist or burial chamber they have been very considerably disordered. The mound has discontinuous traces of banks along the edge rather than being raised in the centre and there is some hint that there may have been horns on the north-east end forming a shallow forecourt. Very fine views to south-west but the "chamber" is at north-east, up hill end. A generally eastern orientation would be more usual for a chambered tomb or long barrow. (Smith, 2002)
