Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 34673 Trust : Gwynedd Community : Trewalchmai Unitary authority : Ynys Mon NGR : SH3899876030 Site Type (preferred type first) : POST MEDIEVAL WATER MILL
Description : Developed site, building remains still present. Good potential. (Davidson 2002, p.30)
A corn water mill was associated with the holding of Ysgubor Esgob. This is mentioned in the rentals of the Penrhos Estate from the 18th century onwards. There was a medieval mill in Gwalchmai, but its location is not known, though a lack of suitable rivers means it is likely to have lain somewhere on the same river if not on the same location as the 18th century mill. The mill is likely to have been working up to the first half of the 20th century, though by 1946 it was used for generating electricity. It was not possible to gain access to the site, but it is thought that upstanding walls of the mill remain, though the mill pond has been filled in. (Davidson 2011)
