Bodfeddan Inscribed Stone, Llanfaelog

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 2749
Trust : Gwynedd
Community : Llanfaelog
Unitary authority : Ynys Mon
NGR : SH3560374597
Site Type (preferred type first) : Early Medieval INSCRIBED STONE
Status : Scheduled Ancient Monument

Description :
Inscribed stone 1500yds NE of Ty Newydd burial chamber. Upright at roadside, 6 1/2ft high x 2 3/4ft x 3ft. On the N side is a two line inscription in Roman capitals reading downwards: CVNOGVSH/HIC IACIT: (Cunogusi) early 6th century. (RCAHMW, 1937)

In the centre of the E face is a well defined cup mark suggesting that the inscription was added to a pre-existing cup marked stone. (Crew, 1981)

The cup-mark mentioned by Crew (1981) is as described. It is of typical cup-mark size, 60mm diam. and 12mm deep, of typical cup-mark profile with shallow, even curvature. The stone is quite weathered and somewhat irregular so there are no peck or grinding marks to confirm that the mark was manufactured but it is very regular and there are no similar irregularities in the stone. (Smith, 2010)

Circular earthwork: site of the discovery of the Llantrisant inscribed stone and the disturbance of possible cists in the 18th century. The site is known as Capel Bronwen. (Longley & Richards, 2000)
