Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 2643
Trust : Gwynedd
Community : Cwm Cadnant
Unitary authority : Ynys Mon
NGR : SH57157734
Site Type (preferred type first) : Bronze Age STANDING STONE
Status : Scheduled Ancient Monument

Description :
Maen Hir 7 1/2ft high. (RCAHMW, 1937)

Scheduled <2>

Cremlyn stone, south, which fell during the winter of 1977, re-erected after investigation of its setting. An area of 12m x 6.5m opened around the stone, revealing a neatly cut circular hole and a 19th century pottery sherd. The hole was shallow, with packing stones on N side. Below that was a small circular pit 0.25m wide and 0.14m deep, possibly a post hole which pre-dated the stone, the base of which covered the pit entirely. Sticky brown earth of a foreign nature filled the hole, but there was no indication of its purpose. No dating evidence for the erection of the stone. Finds include a flint scraper from the site and two worked flints from nearby ploughsoil. <3> <7> (Lynch, 1977)

Further discussion and report of 1977 excavations. <4>

South stone 1.85m high by 0.75m square is weathering badly. <5>

As described previously except erosion of ground around base. <10>

As described previously but note that it was originally c.2.5m high. When re-erected it was set deeper in the ground. It lies on a slight rise, not a summit in undulating ground, making it visible for some way around. Taking the two N&S stones together they align either to NNW or SSE. To the NNW another standing stone (PRN 2649) and the group of odd stones at Hafotty (PRN2653-7). (Smith, 2003)
