Description :
Erect Stone. <1>

There is a stone standing in a wood at Plas Bodafon in the parish of Penrhoslligwy, on a spot called Ponc y Garreg Hir. It is 5ft 3ins high, 3ft 3ins wide and 2ft 3ins thick, composed of quartzite. At its foot is a smaller stone somewhat like a step. It is difficult to decide whether this is an ancient stone or no. It has not a weathered appearance and has never been chronicled. <2>

The area is now densely afforested and the stone could not be located. <3>

A large upright stone found at this grid reference after the plantation was felled in 1992. <4>

The stone is a large angular block deliberately set on end. There is a smaller angular stone lying flat on the ground at its N side as described by Baynes. The stone stands on a small knoll about 10m diameter, 1.4m high and to the S side of it, this could be a cairn as it lies on a ridge but there is a larger outcrop further to the N and so it could be just an outcrop, hidden by soil and forest litter. The stone has very little lichen growth possibly suggesting it is not ancient but is of a smooth quartz stone that may not allow lichen to grow. (Smith, 2003)

The monument comprises a fine standing stone, probably dating to the Bronze Age (c.2300 BC - 800 BC) and situated within woodland on the lower east-facing slopes of Mynydd Bodafon. The standing stone measures about 1.6m in height, 0.8m in thickness and 0.8m in width and is situated on a slight knoll. The stone is of unusual quartzite composition. (Cadw, 2004)
