: MEDIEVAL MOTTE AND BAILEY / MEDIEVAL MASONRY CASTLE
: scheduled monument
Probable castle site comprising low motte astride line of quadrangular bailey (Hogg, A H A & King, D J C, 1963).
Possible masonry foundations gone before 1858 (Williams, J, 1858).
Site no longer visible(OS, 1972).
The moat mentioned by RCAHM 1913 is a quarry.
Castle recorded in "The Chronicles of the Princes" in 1177-8; destroyed by Llywelyn the Great 1231 and apparently not rebuilt (Silvester, R J 1994b, 146).
Built in 1177 by Lord Rhys. Presumably built to mark the northern boundary of his domain (Gregory, D, 1994).
Only visible remnant of the original castle is the rock-cut ditch on the northern side of the scheduled area (Cadw, 2000).
