Description :
The Alcove represents the southernmost structure of the Piercefield Walk. This semi-octagonal platform supports a semi-circular stone 'alcove' seat looking out upon spectacular views of the gorge, Chepstow Castle and town. The Alcove is significant as a major structural viewing point on the famous 18th century Piercefield Walk. Additional interest is given by the survival of still upright railings and other original features and also the fact that it is one of the few view points which still retains its original outlook. It is built over a steep natural bluff; the platform edge was protected by wrought iron railings as used on The Platform (PRN 7828g), and it was created by the construction of a wall of coursed limestone rubble measuring 4m wide x 2.5m deep; the rear wall rising to 1.2m high and supported by an earth mound. There are 2 low brick steps across the front of the alcove which contains a modern timber seat on a concrete base. The south side of the viewpoint is supported by a revetment wall of limestone rubble standing up to 2.5m high which continues to joint the better preserved remains of the park boundary wall.
