Description :
A large sub-circular cairn situated in dense woodland on a ridge crest. The cairn has an irregularly defined perimeter with no visible evidence for a ditch or kerbstones. The sides are quite steeply sloping to the SE-S-SW with a more gently gradient to the N&NW. The cairn is composed of cobble sized stone. The mound is generally higher to the S and the top is heavily disturbed with a 2m hollow at its centre, most likely the result of a robbing event. The cairn to the S, described as a possible satellite cairn, is most likely the spoil removed from the larger cairns centre.
Dimensions: diameter 11.3m; height 0.5m-1.4m
(1999) Round cairn measuring c.11m diameter and 1.3m high. This stony round cairn stands within forestry between two extraction rides. At the time of the visit it was heavily overgrown with trees and undergrowth. The exposed stones were all covered with moss.
The cairn is located within an area of Douglas Firs, some of which are growing out of the body of the cairn itself. Unusually, it would appear that the cairn has been planted through when the trees were planted here. The top of the cairn has a shallow hollow in it c.0.4m deep and 4-5m across. It would appear likely that this is the result of stone removal, possibly an attempt to rob the cairn. There is no indication that this hollow goes down to ground level. There are no visible signs of a kerb around the outside of the cairn or other structural elements.
A large pile of stones c.4m wide can be seen immediately to the S of the cairn, tentatively described in some reports as a possible satellite cairn. An alternative interpretation would be that it has been created from the material removed from the centre of the main cairn.
Although disrupted by past forestry activities the cairn is still a substantial structure and when it is cleared of trees should be quite impressive. (Source 01)
