Description :
Domen Fawr Cairn IV is a large, prominent, and fairly well-preserved example of a burial monument of the Early Bronze Age (c. 2000-1500 BC). It is some 12m in diameter by 1.0m high. The site has been much disturbed in the north-western quadrant by the insertion of a brick and concrete structure (3.0m by 3.0m) into the body of the cairn (probably a pillbox or observation post dating from WWII).
The cairn stands on the summit of Domen Fawr with spectacular views over the Ebbw Fawr valley to the east and forms an important element in a wider prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential with a strong possibility of the presence of intact burial remains and preserved prehistoric ground surfaces below the monument. (01)
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ritual practices. The well preserved monument is an important relic of a prehistoric funerary and ritual landscape and retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of both intact burial or ritual deposits and environmental and structural evidence, including a buried prehistoric land surface. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is circular and measures 22m in diameter.
