Summary :
Pair of mounds (PRNs 600m, 601m) on Mynydd Garthmaelwg, at the edge of the escarpment which forms the southern edge of the Coalfield. They are both far larger than is normally found, but it seems probable that their present height may be the result of augmentation during period of use as post- medieval beacon platforms.

Description :
Pair of mounds (PRNs 600m, 601m) on Mynydd Garthmaelwg, at the edge of the escarpment which forms the southern edge of the Coalfield. They are both far larger than is normally found, but it seems probable that their present height may be the result of augmentation during period of use as post-medieval beacon platforms. Their use as beacon platforms is attested by the name; the identification as originally having been Bronze Age burial mounds is conjecture, but the location is characteristic for barrows/cairns, and the pairing of the mounds would seem more typical for barrows than beacons. Dimensions: See description.
