Description :
This bridge inscribed with a date of 1824 is constructed of cast-iron members spanning the river Clydach. Either side of the bridge Rattenbury suggests there is evidence of a cobbled stoneroad which formed a branch linking the Ironworks to Clydach Rail Road (05976.0g), but this could equally have bee a tramroad. During the productive years of the Clydach Ironworks, the bridge was used to receive raw materials and transport the finished products to the Clydach Rail Road via an incline. Part of the formation of this incline can be seen close to the Leat Keeper's Cottage (06020g) before it disappears under the Heads of the Valleys Road. Although no evidence of stone block was found site, they are recorded around the stone revetting within the Clydach river bank (06021g). An 1863 lease shows a tramroad crossing the Clydach close to the ironworks on a bridge probably Smart's Bridge and it appears to turn down the north side of the river (Babtie, 1997).
