Gwehelog Camp

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 02057g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Gwehelog Fawr
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : SO39730247
Site Type (preferred type first) : Iron Age Enclosure
Status : Scheduled Monument

Summary :
The location of this enclosure is on the slope of a hill with a stream at the bottom of the natural scarp. However the views commanded by this position are very limited and the defences are too spread to determine if this was defensive. However, no ditch is visible at all, and where only the natural scarp remains it is suggested that any earthworks where insubstantial to have survived.

Description :
The location of this enclosure is on the slope of a hill with a stream at the bottom of the natural scarp. However the views commanded by this position are very limited and the defences are too spread to determine if this was defensive. However, no ditch is visible at all, and where only the natural scarp remains it is suggested that any earthworks where insubstantial to have survived.
The univallate oval-shaped enclosure has been plough damaged and the defences now spread. The enclosure is surround by a bank 10m across and about 0.3m high. The ground slopes down to the east, with a stream below, if earthworks survived on this lower ground they have since been ploughed out for nothing is now visible.
Only the western edge of the enclosure is visible and even then it is only just visible as an earthwork, the bank is spread and ploughed out. Nothing is visible on the east side of the enclosure, a natural scarp exists, which falls away steeply towards the stream, but no visible 'man-made' earthworks could be seen as an addition to this scarp.
The condition on the noted as 'VERY GOOD' on SAM report (2000). The current researcher (H Wiggins 2006) would question this condition and suggest that the SMR condition 'Damaged' is a more accurate description.
In the past this has been questioned as an Iron Age enclosure and certainly its nature as a defended settlement is questioned on the OS cards in this file. After visiting this site, the current researcher (H Wiggins 2006) would agree with this questioning and would suggest that this is most likely of the Iron Age but is not of a defensive nature. I would also question the reason for scheduling on this site. (Wiggins 2006)
